History of the Police Invitation Shield Tournament
The City's major tournaments before Independence were the Quadrangular and Pentangular. They were played amongst various communities like Hindus, Christians, Parsees, Muslims, etc. After 1947 this Community Tournament was run by the City Police and was named as Police Invitation Shield Cricket Tournament, better known as “Police Shield”.
The Police Shield since 1947 has been played amongst the various Gymkhanas as the Founder Members as per the Communities which were played earlier. The Gymkhanas were Hindu Gymkhana, Parsee Gymkhana, Islam Gymkhana, and Catholic Gymkhana. The Police Shield has been constantly played by 8 Teams every year including the above 4 Gymkhanas and the rest of the them were Bombay Gymkhana, The Cricket Club Of India, Mumbai city Police XI and Bombay University, we have the MCAXI participating. This Tournament had been always played in the best spirits.
This Tournament has been a stepping stone for the young promising cricketers to exhibit their talents against the established players, and it has always given opportunity for the Youngsters to perform and give them a chance to be selected for higher grades of Cricket in the Country and even selectors follow performances of the Players in the Tournament.
The Police Shield which is in its 50th year now has been continuously played for the last Fifty years with only a gap of three years in between in the year 1980-82 and has been acclaimed as one of the best Tournament in the City of Mumbai. This is the only Tournament where the Police personnels are involved in organising this tournament anywhere in the World and a lot of credit goes to the Police Department for patronising this Tournament for 50 years.
